Joseph Ehrenfeld

Joseph Ehrenfeld was born around 1872 in New Orleans to Levi Ehrenfeld and the former Sophie Levy, both natives of Germany. For reasons not recorded, Joseph was admitted to the Home in 1873. In 1878, while he was living in the Home, Joseph’s mother died.

In 1885, Joseph was discharged from the Home to work for Leon Kahn in Marshall, Texas. By 1895, Joe served as clerk and baggage master for the New Orleans Pacific Division of the International and Great Northern Railway at Palestine, Texas. He later became an accountant and served as secretary of Oriental Textile Mills in Houston.

By 1920, in his community activities, Joe served as president of B’nai Brith’s Houston Lodge No, 434. In that capacity he oversaw lodge recommendations for admission of Houston children to the Home in New Orleans.

Joe married the former Stella Loeb and raised a son. Joe died in 1944 in Houston and was buried in Beth Israel Cemetery.
