Annabelle, Sol, Moses, & Joseph Cypress

In 1893, Simon Cypress married Kate Zivitz in Birmingham, Alabama, where they raised a family and Simon was part-owner of a general merchandise store, Cypress & Gilday. Simon died in 1901. Four years later, on the recommendation of Birmingham’s B’nai B’rith Lodge, Kate admitted her four children to the Home. Annabelle (7) arrived in New Orleans with her brothers, Joseph (11), Moses (9), and Sol (6).

One year later, the children returned to their mother in Birmingham, where by 1920, Joseph, Moses, and Sol worked in a dry cleaner business.

In 1919, Annabelle married Louis Sokol, who later became the executive of a furniture business. They raised three sons. Annabelle died in 1961 and was buried in Birmingham’s Knesses Israel Cemetery.

In 1925, Joseph married Sarah Kaufman. They lived and raised two sons in Birmingham where Joseph owned a restaurant equipment business. Joseph died in 1964 and, like his sister, was buried in Knesses Israel Cemetery. 

In 1918, Moses was inducted into the Army and assigned to Fort Gordon near August, Georgia. According to the National Jewish Welfare Bureau, he earned an award for distinguished service. Moses died in 1944 and was also buried in Knesses Israel Cemetery.

In 1928, Sol married Rose Green and the couple made their home in Jasper, Alabama. Sol died in 1984 and joined his siblings in Knesses Israel Cemetery.
