Louisa, Isabella, Israel, & Moses Adler
In 1878, Samuel Adler and his wife, the former Henrietta Newburg, were living in New Orleans with their six children. After Henrietta and one of the children died of Yellow Fever that year, four of the five surviving children – Louisa (“Lulu”), Isabella (“Bella”), Israel, and Moses — were admitted to the Home. According to the same registry pages, in April 1879, Lulu and Israel were discharged to their married sister, Rebecca Koch, in Galveston, Texas. The minutes from the December 7, 1879 meeting of the Home’s board report that it granted the application of Galveston’s B’nai B’rith Lodge to readmit Lulu and Israel. All four children were discharged to their father in December 1881.

While in the Home, Bella was awarded the Home’s Michael Reese Prize ($25 in 1881, today worth more than $800) “as a reward for merit of her studies.” In 1886, she married Abraham Kern with whom she raised five children in New York. Bella died in 1956.
In 1893, Moses graduated from New York University Law School. The next year he married Julia Bernstein with whom he raised two children in New York. Moses died in 1940.

According to Lulu’s grandson, Martin Simonson, in 1896 Lulu married Henry Simonson with whom she raised four children in New York. Lulu died in 1961.
